Anatomy of a Septic Tank
When sewage enters your septic tank, it settles into 3 layers.

The Scum floats on top.
The Effluent or grey water goes through the middle.
The Sludge sinks to the bottom.

Eventually the scum and sludge will reach levels that cause your septic tank to operate incorrectly, this is why regular Maintenance is required , to check the levels and Pump out the Scum and Sludge when needed.
The Doctor Reccommends Regular Maintenance
Fixing big septic problems after things have gone wrong can be very expensive. Fortunately, a little maintenance can go a long way to avoid problems, and keep your septic system running smoothly for years to come.

The sludge and scum should be pumped out periodically, generally
  • when the bottom of the floating scum layer is within 6 inches of the outlet pipe
  • or the top of the sunken sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet pipe
